In the cafe, we aim to have a least 2 gluten free cake options, which are suitable for those on a low or gluten free diet, however due to the risk of cross contamination in our compact baking area they are not suitable for coeliacs. All our coffees and the dark and white hot chocolates are suitable for coeliacs, and a tasting plate of gluten free chocolates usually satisfies that sweet tooth!
With our chocolates, we recently tested the chocolates from our repertoire that are made without any gluten containing ingredients to assess and confirm gluten content. Roger Elliott, of fantastic website Celiac Travel, came down to the factory and did the tests with us. Roger used a gluten test kit which tests down to 5 parts per million (the legal limit for labelling food 'gluten free' is 20 parts per million) to test truffles and flavour compounds, and they both passed with flying colours. We can now confidently assert that the chocolates we make with gluten free ingredients are indeed gluten free! It was sad to have to sacrifice a Banoffee Truffle or two but we're now confident that all our individual chocolates are gluten free apart from 8 flavours. Gluten free chocolates can be identified using the menu cards in the boxes and from the images online with the ‘build your own box’ option.
To buy gluten free selection boxes simply choose the relevant 'gluten free' option when choosing your box or select individual chocolates from the ‘build your own box’ option.
Our small factory does handle gluten so there is always the risk of cross contamination even when products do not directly contain gluten ingredients.
As our chocolate selection box packaging is purchased from our supplier in bulk, the ingredients list is generic to cover all our ingredients used in our range of over 60 chocolates and truffles. We therefore over-label this with gluten free labelling and add a wheat free sticker to the box to indicate that the selection is indeed that. As we are a small producer we do not have the purchasing power to have bespoke boxes for every dietary requirement (gluten free, dairy free, alcohol free, vegan etc) which is why we will use the generic box and apply a sticker to indicate what the selection is when required. Furthermore, the menu card inside the box will allow you to identify each chocolate individually, all of which are denoted gluten free, dairy free or alcohol free.
In the cafe, we offer the option of coconut or oat milk for coffees and hot chocolates. We have also created a dairy free hot chocolate made from 70% cocoa dark chocolate, Moo milk chocolate and dairy free milk - also a good option for those watching their sugar intake. We aim to have a couple of vegan options too, including our peanut butter cookies, cookie dough bars and nibble pots.
Dairy pops up a lot in our chocolates as milk and white chocolate feature heavily in our recipes. However we do have a selection of dairy free products - individual chocolates include dark chocolate strawberry creams, lime creams, blackcurrant creams, mango, passion fruit, peppermint creams, rose and violet creams and strawberry & balsamic creams. Our 70% cocoa bars with candied orange, espresso beans and chilli & salt are also dairy free as well as our dipped gingers and plain chocolate honeycomb. And we can do all manner of shapes exclusively in dark chocolate. If you have any requests please do not hesitate to call the shop on 01631 566099.
Unfortunately, due to the compact nature of our factory we cannot make nut free products and as we use nuts in both our chocolate making and cake baking they are present. This includes peanuts. We're really sorry, and would have a nut free area if we could! If you are unsure about anything, please do not hesitate to ask our staff members.
